On Thursday, September 11, 2025, the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) launched its inaugural Data Privacy Club, a groundbreaking initiative facilitated by the Directorate of Advancement, under the leadership of Professor Olubukola Oyawoye, in collaboration with the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC). This initiative aims to enhance awareness of digital rights, data protection, and responsible online engagement among students.

The launch event, held at the university, was attended by Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Olubunmi Shittu, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Administration Professor Tajudeen Opoola, and the Registrar, who was represented by Mr. Sunday A. Akinkumi, along with NDPC representatives, faculty members, and students.
During the launch, Professor Adebola Aderibigbe, Director of the Directorate of Career Services, encouraged students to view data privacy not just as a regulatory requirement, but as an essential life skill that protects their personal identity in an increasingly digital world. He also urged the newly inaugurated executives to incorporate honesty and integrity into the club’s operations, emphasizing that transparency in leadership is crucial for maintaining the club’s credibility and impact.

Barrister Alex Onwe, a representative from the NDPC, reiterated the Commission’s commitment to supporting the club with resources and technical guidance to enhance its effectiveness.
A highlight of the event was the inauguration of the pioneer executives of the FUOYE Data Privacy Club. The elected officers are:

- Oluwagbamila Erioluwa – General Secretary
- Fawole Deborah Tosin – Public Relations Officer I
- Aremu Adesina Oladapo – Director of Research I
- Adewuyi Toba Francis – Director of Operations I
- Awolusi Elizabeth Oluwaseun – Financial Secretary
In her remarks, Professor Olubukola Oyawoye, Director of Advancement, noted that the establishment of the club is part of the Directorate’s mission to foster partnerships, innovation, and student-centered initiatives that position FUOYE as a globally competitive institution.

“The Data Privacy Club is expected to organize a variety of activities, including workshops, peer learning sessions, and community outreach programs, aimed at equipping students with the knowledge needed to protect personal and institutional data, while also becoming advocates for responsible digital behavior.”
